RSinteract Version 3.5 was released October 2007. The latest build numbers are 3025 for Enterprise Edition and 3026 for Standard Edition.

To determine your current build, hover over the RSinteract logo in the top right of RSinteract. Otherwise, on the machine where RSinteract is installed, go to Add or Remove Programs, click on RSinteract and click on the link that says 'Click here for support information' - the build number is the four digit version number. Please note that releases before May 2006 may not display a build number or may have a 7 digit number, if in doubt you should upgrade.

Please see below to upgrade.

If you have already installed RSinteract your existing edition will be retained regardless of whether you download Standard, Enterprise or Evaluation packages. You can download the latest build here.

All earlier builds of RSinteract will be upgraded and your existing reports, data sources and license will be retained.

Please note: if your SQL or OLAP data source is not on the same machine as RSinteract please see the next item.

To add a data source:

1.

Open Start Menu -> Programs -> RSinteract -> RSinteract Administration Utilities.

2.

On the Data Sources tab add a new data source, sample connection strings are:   Analysis Services 2000:   Provider=MSOLAP.3;Data Source=localhost;ConnectTo=8.0;Initial Catalog=FoodMart 2000   SQL 2000:   data source=(local);initial catalog=RSinteractSamples   Analysis Services 2005:   Provider=MSOLAP;Data Source=localhost;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=RSinteract Samples DW   SQL 2005:   data source=(local);initial catalog=RSinteractSamples

Please make sure you select the correct data source type. Any credentials entered are securely encrypted. You can use the Diagnostics tab if you have any network or authentication problems.

Data sources are stored in RSinteract\Data Sources on Report Manager but please ALWAYS use the RSinteract Administration Utilities to configure data sources.

If your SQL or OLAP data source is not on the same machine as RSinteract then you will need to supply a domain user credential.

Note: this is not applicable if your domain has Kerberos configured, however this is not common in our experience. Sorry, but we can't support you with Kerberos setup but there is plenty of information online if you use Kerberos.

When three machines (the client PC, RSinteract web server and SQL or OLAP server) are involved in a request then Windows will only pass your Windows credentials for the first hop. This can be overcome using Kerberos but Microsoft has also given Reporting Services the ability to connect using credentials stored securely in the report server. When using this method RSinteract also needs these credentials so please ALWAYS use the RSinteract Administration Utilities to configure your data sources. All information is securely encrypted.

You'll need to enter a domain level user account. It may be best to test first using your own account, once you have made sure this works you can switch to an account with fewer permissions. You can use the Diagnostics tab to test your data sources.

To request a new license:

1.	Open the License Updater: Start Menu -> Programs -> RSinteract -> RSinteract License Updater.
2.	From the screen that appears cut and paste your machine's information.
3.	Please email us with these values and we'll send you a license key - you can then cut and paste the key back into the License Updater application.

A Windows 2000, 2003, XP or Vista machine configured for either:

- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services with Service Pack 1 applied
OR
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services with Service Pack 2 applied

Installation packages:
RSinteract will install the Microsoft .NET Framework 2 and ADOMD.NET, you may be required to confirm installation from either Microsoft or Macrovision.

Client Requirements:
RSinteract is designed to run in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or 7.

To run RSinteract on a SharePoint server the RSinteract Virtual Directory needs to be set to Excluded in the SharePoint Sites Managed Paths.

1. In Administrative Tools open SharePoint Central Administration
2. Configure virtual server settings
3. Choose your web server
4. Define Managed Paths
5. Add a New Path - enter "/RSinteract" and check "Excluded Path" - hit OK

For more information refer to the SharePoint documentation.

- A physical directory which defaults to C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract.
- A virtual directory in IIS.
- A Windows user account named 'RSinteractSystem' - you'll need to put your new users in this group if they don't all ready have read access to C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract\website and to Reporting Services.
- A Windows user group 'RSinteract Users'.
- Two folders in Reporting Services 'RSinteract' (hidden) and 'RSinteract Samples'. These contain sample reports and data sources.
- Access privileges to Reporting Services for the user account and group. These can be seen on properties of the home directory in Report Manager.
- Two sample SQL databases and, if you use Analysis Services, a sample cube.
- A SQL user role for 'RSinteract Users' with read access to the sample databases.

To un-install use Add/Remove programs. To allow you to uninstall then upgrade we leave behind the Report Server folders and the user account and group but you can easily delete them manually.

RSinteract Standard Edition is limited to between 10 and 25 reports. On install a folder is created in Reporting Services called 'RSinteract Reports' - RSinteract SE will only open, edit and save reports within this folder or sub-folders. The report limit applies to all reports within this folder and any subfolders. You can use Report Manager to move reports out of this folder, they will still run in Reporting Services but they will no longer be visible to RSinteract.

The initial package allows 10 reports. You can add extra 5-report packs up to a limit of 3 packs which gives you 25 reports maximum.

As with Enterprise Edition you are licensed for use on one server and can allow access to as many users as you wish. There is no processor limit for SE.

PLEASE NOTE! This solution has not been fully tested - if in doubt please contact us before investing your time!

If RSinteract is not on the same machine as Reporting Services you will need to:

1. Configure Kerberos for your domain. Please note we do not offer support for setup of Kerberos! We will help you configure RSinteract to browse from the web server but you will need to configure Kerberos to allow you to browse from client machines.

2. Download and run the ReportViewer package on your RSinteract web server.

3. On your RSinteract web server, open Start Menu -> All Programs -> RSinteract -> RSinteract Administration Utilities
    Enter a domain level user - for ease of support we recommend this user is named 'RSinteractSystem'.

4. On the Report Server, in Report Manager go to the properties of the home folder and give MyDomain\RSinteractSystem access to the RSinteract Application Role.

On your RSinteract web server, use notepad to open C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract\Website\RSinteract.config and edit the Report Server and Report Manager addresses (the Report Manager address is only used if you browse to a data source in the RSinteract folder view).

Use Notepad to open C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract\website\web.config

Change the key httpRuntime - executionTimeout

Under some circumstances drill-through may not be enabled for the RSinteract sample reports. You will get an error stating: The operation requested failed due to security problems - resource access error.

To fix this problem, on the machine where RSinteract is installed: open Analysis Manager; expand the Foodmart database; expand Cubes; right click on the HR cube and choose Manage Roles; under Drill-through click the button marked "..."; check the Allow drill-through box. Repeat this for the Sales cube.

If your users see an RSinteract Setup page with the following error message:

'Access was denied whilst connecting to Reporting Services (View folders)'

This is usually because the user does not have access to Reporting Services. To rectify this problem:

1. Add your user to the windows user group 'RSinteract Users'.

OR follow these steps:

1. In Report Manager go to the properties of the 'Home' directory.

2. To add a new user: Click 'New Role Assignment'. Enter the user's windows domain and login (DomainOrMachine\UserName) or a user group which the user belongs to (DomainOrMachine\GroupName). 3. Give access to the RSinteract User Role.

This problem has been seen on some systems using AS2000. If you receive the following error whilst using an Analysis Services data source:

Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {67427FB4-A9D6-401D-9D90-0E3C8A267E7E} failed due to the following error: 80040154

Please install ADOMD.net from Microsoft here

Only build number 2710 is affected - all prior and subsequent builds will install ADOMD.net for you.

If your SQL or OLAP data source is on a different machine to RSinteract then you will need to configure a data source credential. Please see above.

The following is an IIS error which occurred on one of our client sites. This is NOT an error with RSinteract! It may never be seen again but the debugging process is useful.

Description: An error occurred during the compilation of a resource required to service this request. Please review the following specific error details and modify your source code appropriately.

Compiler Error Message: CS0016: Could not write to output file 'c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\rsinteract\53e8258b\3ad89aa7\App_global.asax.aosvtxr3.dll' -- 'Access is denied. '

The error had nothing to do with Temporary ASP.NET files folder. We used Filemon to monitor folders and processes on the whole of the c:\ drive to see where a permission denied error was occurring. The Access Denied error was due to the NETWORK SERVICE account not having permissions on c:\Temp folder.

Please note: RSinteract does NOT need access to your c:\temp folder. Under normal circumstances IIS and NETWORK SERVICE do not need access to your c:\temp folder - this error was probably due to a very unusual configuration of Microsoft IIS.

After install:

- Contact ICS to activate your Standard Edition
- Open C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract\Website\RSinteract.config in notepad and set configured="True"
- Open C:\Program Files\ICS\RSinteract\Website\web.config in notepad and save it - this will restart RSinteract

On some local installations of Reporting Services you may have problems installing or running RSinteract. Note: Most people install Reporting Services with US settings even if they're not in an English speaking country - if so this doesn't occur. This issue has been seen on German and French installations - other localisations may not have the same issue.

If you suspect you have a localisation issue then make sure you have the latest build (see above). Once you've installed you should run RSinteract once. It will upload some files to Reporting Services then an error will occur. On a German build the following message is displayed:

An error occurred setting up RSinteract: Die RSinteract Application Role-Rolle wurde nicht gefunden.; bei Ics.Reporting.Base.ExceptionHandler.Throw(SoapException exception) bei Ics.Reporting.Service.ServiceWrapper.SetPolicies(String itemPath, String groupUserName, String roleName) bei Ics.Reporting.Core.Report.SetPolicies(String itemPath, String groupUserName, String roleName) bei Ics.Reporting.Reporting.SetPolicies(String itemPath, String groupUserName, String roleName) bei IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.CreateRole(XmlDocument messageDoc, String groupUserName, String roleName, String roleDesc, String[] taskNames) bei IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.CreateRoles(XmlDocument messageDoc) bei IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.OnSession_Start(Object sender, EventArgs e)

This roughly translates to "The RSinteract Application Role cannot be found."

You'll need to create user roles in Report Manager:

1	Open Internet Explorer
2	Navigate to SQL Server Report Manager (e.g. http://myservername/reports)
3	Click "Site Settings" in the top-right corner of the page
4	Underneath the heading "Security" click "Configure item-level role definitions"
5	Click "New Role" on the toolbar just above the list of current roles
6	Enter the following details: - Name: RSinteract Application Role - Description: Used by RSinteract to get RDL and list data sources - Tasks (these will be in your own language):   - Manage reports   - View data sources   - View folders
7	Click "OK"
8	Repeat steps 5-7 entering these details: - Name: RSinteract User Role - Description: Allows users to view and edit reports using RSinteract - Tasks (these will be in your own language):   - View data sources   - View folders   - View reports   - View resources

It is unlikely that this is a problem with RSinteract! This usually means the web server is unavailable or your internet/network connection has failed.

However, if you're using build number 2710 it may be an error which occurs when the 'RSinteractSystem' user can't access Reporting Services. The problem is best fixed by upgrading to the latest release, you'll then see the correct error message.

Please see above to determine your build number and to see how easy it is to apply our updates.

A common error when Reporting Services 2000 and 2005 are installed on the same box:

The report server cannot decrypt the symmetric key used to access sensitive or encrypted data in a report server database. You must either restore a backup key or delete all encrypted content and then restart the service.

Open a command prompt and enter:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\RSKeyMgmt.exe" -d

Note: If you get the message: "No key operation was selected. Choose extract, apply, or delete." then try deleting and retyping " -d" as the space and minus characters may have been altered by your browser.

When starting RSinteract you see this message:

An error occurred setting up your RSinteract account: The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. (rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable) Cannot generate SSPI context.; at IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.GetFolder(String path, XmlDocument messageDoc, Boolean applicationConfigured, String& version) in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Reporting\IcsReporting\RSinteractGlobal.cs:line 706 at IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.CheckForInteractTemp(XmlDocument messageDoc, Boolean applicationConfigured) in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Reporting\IcsReporting\RSinteractGlobal.cs:line 606 at IcsReporting.RSinteractGlobal.OnSession_Start(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Reporting\IcsReporting\RSinteractGlobal.cs:line 409

This is a problem with Reporting Services which is occasionally seen on one of our development boxes - it is possibly related to working offline from the domain controller. To remedy:

Go to: Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2005\Configuration Tools\Reporting Services Configuration Connect to your RS SQL Server, you should see that Initialization is Not Configured - on the Server Status page, click Stop then Start.

When you open or update a report, the RSinteract progress message never closes.

On certain setups of Windows Server 2003 the onload event doesn't fire in Internet Explorer - this occurs when browsing any website, not just RSinteract. You may be able to resolve this problem by changing your Internet Explorer settings or checking for help online.

If you're hosting RSinteract on the problem machine it doesn't affect other RSinteract users surfing from other machines.

You can pass the value of any field to an external site. This example use the "Sales Orders by Person" sample report and passes the Territory Group to Wikipedia:

- Open the Section Edit screen
- Hover over the field you wish to pass and note down the "RDL field" name. e.g. "TerrGroup"
- Go to links and put your 'Jump to URL' together like this:
    ="http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/" & Fields!TerrGroup.Value
    Don't forget the equals sign or the "http://". Make sure you use an ampersand "&" not a plus "+" symbol

Please note: This will only work in build 2998 or later.

Here's how to pass OLAP Equals filters on the URL, other types are easier to setup because you don't have fiddly member syntax.

-	Create a report with parameters, or use the "Internet Sales Table with Filters" sample report
-	Open Report Manager, usually http://localhost/Reports/
-	Click the "Show Details" button on the right
-	Click the properties icon next to your report
-	Go to the Parameters screen
-	Copy the parameter names and values: Parameter Name Parameter Value Date_Fiscal [Date].[Fiscal].[Fiscal Year].&[2004] Product_Product_Categories [Product].[Product Categories].[Category].&[1] Customer_Customer_Geography [Customer].[Customer Geography].[Country].&[United Kingdom]
-	Make sure there are no braces { } and change ampersands to %26 in the parameter values (but not in the rest of the URL)
-	You may wish to convert all spaces to "%20"
-	Open the report in RSinteract and copy the URL from the Address Bar
-	Put the URL together: http://localhost/RSinteract/?RSinteract%20Samples/Adventure%20Works%20OLAP%20-%20Internet%20Sales%20Table%20with%20Filters&Date_Fiscal=[Date].[Fiscal].[Fiscal%20Year].%26[2004]&Product_Product_Categories=[Product].[Product%20Categories].[Category].%26[1]&Customer_Customer_Geography=[Customer].[Customer%20Geography].[Country].%26[United%20Kingdom]
-	You'll see the parameter boxes in the filter panel have the values "2004" and "1" but when you hit the picker buttons you'll see that these members have the captions "FY 2004" and "Bikes". To make this neater you can use the "^" character to pass a member caption by placing "^FY 2004" and "^Bikes" in the URL as follows: http://localhost/RSinteract/?RSinteract%20Samples/Adventure%20Works%20OLAP%20-%20Internet%20Sales%20Table%20with%20Filters&Date_Fiscal=[Date].[Fiscal].[Fiscal%20Year].%26[2004]^FY%202004&Product_Product_Categories=[Product].[Product%20Categories].[Category].%26[1]^Bikes&Customer_Customer_Geography=[Customer].[Customer%20Geography].[Country].%26[United%20Kingdom]

Notes:
-	If your report has the 'Always Ask' option ticked you'll need to add "&rsi:noq=1" to the URL to tell RSinteract not to show the question screen.
-	Any errors in the report frame are probably due to typing or formatting errors in parameter values - if you're not sure about your parameter values then open the report in Report Manager and paste them in.
-	You don't need to pass all the parameters on the URL, those not passed will use the normal report defaults. The rsi:noq=1 option only works if all parameters have a values set - either a default value or a URL value.
-	Don't worry if your square brackets are converted to %5d and %5b by the browser.
-	Make sure you keep everything case sensitive.
